Abstract
The Legg-Calve-Perthes disease have been studied for about 80 years but the etiology of this disease is still obscure and the methods of treatment are not well established.
The principle of treatment is known to be a good containment of femoral head in acstabulum until the necrotic femoral head regenerates. The containment can be provided by various conservative or surgical methods. The surgical treatments include osteotomies of ilium or femur and had advantages of earlier ambulation and better remodelling by active motions.
Authors reviewed 7 cases of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease who were treated by femoral osteotomy and followed for more than 2 years. The cases were 6 boys and a girl having ages from 5 years and a month to 8 years and a month at the time of surgery. The pre-operative X-rays revealed Catterall group 3 in 4 cases an Catterall group 4 in 3 cases with considerable collapses in all cases. The anatomic results evaluated at 2 years and 8 months in average ranging from 2 years and a month to 4 years and 2 months after surgery revealed excellent in 2 cases, fair in 3 cases and poor in 2 cases according to Catterall criteria.
The femoral osteotomy performed in selected cases of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is considered to be a good method of treatment.
